How to Make Sure Your Pool is Clean All Season Long
How to Maintain Your Pool
Having a swimming pool in the backyard is a great way to keep your cool during the hot summer months. However, maintaining a pool is also hard work. Just like any other piece of equipment, your pool needs to have regular maintenance to perform at its best. Here are the “three Cs” you always need to do to maintain your pool and keep it sparkling clean.
1. Cleaning
Here are the three steps to cleaning the pool:
- Skimming – Skim the surface of the pool and empty out the skimmer baskets.
- Brushing – Use a brush to scrub the walls, floor, corners, and ladders of the pool to remove dirt and keep the surface smooth.
- Vacuuming – Vacuum the pool to ensure the remaining dirt that has accumulated at the bottom of the pool has been removed.
2. Circulation
The circulation of your pool hugely depends on the its filtration system, which is composed of two parts. The pump draws water and keeps it circulating within the pool, while the filter collects the dirt and debris to prevent them from contaminating your pool.
Running the pump for a couple of hours each day will ensure the pool is properly filtered. In addition, cleaning the filter every week and backwashing when needed will improve your pool’s filtration system. Currently, there are three types of pool filters: cartridge, sand, and diatomaceous earth (DE). Regardless of the type of filter you have, you will still need to clean it for it to perform satisfactorily. You can clean a cartridge filter or backwash a sand filter to flush out contaminants.
3. Chemistry
There are many factors that affect the balance of your pool such as the weather, product application, and the number of people using it. For that reason, check your pool chemistry to ensure the water is safe to swim.
If you choose to test the water yourself, there are testing kits and easy-to-use strips available that will allow you to check the pH level, chlorine content, calcium hardness, and alkalinity of your pool. You can also shock your pool to prevent algae growth and cloudy water. This will release chlorine into the water and kill the bacteria present in the water.
